Linkages between West Midlands and neighbouring regions

Information
Title: Linkages between West Midlands and neighbouring regions
Date submitted: 25/03/2010
Status: In progress
Priority: High
Description Additional research is needed to explore the extent and nature of spatial spillovers and inter-linkages with the Greater South East – including through economic, as well as labour market (commuting) and housing market (migration) dynamics. More generally, it would be useful to further investigate functional economic linkages between the West Midlands and adjacent regions, including linkages with the North West and East Midlands.

Some elements of this are addressed through the Observatory's report on sub-regional dynamics which looked at cross-boundary links alongside analysis of relationships within the region. In 2008, the Observatory also produced a report monitoring the impact of the Milton Keynes and South Midlands growth area on the region. Further understanding is likely to emerge from work on Local Economic Assessments which is currently underway in local authorities. We will revisit this gap once work on LEAs has progressed further to decide whether any further work is needed.
