Regional population projections

Information
Title: Regional population projections
Date submitted: 26/03/2010
Status: Deferred
Priority: No priority
Description There are widespread concerns about the validity of official population projections. In particular, the official projections are trend based and take no account of policy changes or housing developments. During the demographic change dialogue, a desire was apparent to produce a standard regional approach to projecting future population change taking account of such changes.

During the dialogue we collected information from local authorities about their approach to population projections, which are summarised in the report. Most use the same software, POPGROUP. This means that it is likely to be feasible to develop a region-wide approach which could help ensure consistency between the evidence used to inform local policies/strategies and regional ones.

The Observatory's network groups decided there was little value in pursuing this gap further as it would most likely be overtaken by ONS population projections in the coming months. ONS projections are widely used by partners and would supersede any other work produced by the Observatory or others.
