Description The SoR thematic report on sustainable communities identified some of the key characteristics that we would expect such communities to demonstrate. It also proposed a series of indicators which could be used to monitor the sustainability of communities.

At present, we have no objective measure of which communities might be regarded as the most sustainable in the region. Identifying them might have value in understanding more about their characteristics and for providing case studies that could help improve other communities. The sustainable communities dialogue is continuing and an element of this work may form part of that dialogue but, if not, it may be worth considering as a project in its own right.

This gap will go on hold until the links with national ‘Big Society’ policy can be established.
