The Sector Sustainability Challenge is funded and supported different industry groups (Chartered Institute of Marketing, Furniture Industry Research Association, Confederation of British Metalforming, Quarry Products Association, British Property Federation, Metals Forum) to stimulate initial behavioural change -​ helping sectors to translate concepts and generalities into practical actions and outputs across sectors or within supply chains, plus dissemination of best practice, benchmarking or product based initiatives). The case studies helped Defra understand further the drivers for different sectors. It also developed KPIs for some sectors. The first Challenge was carried out in 2005/​6 with a follow-​on in 2006/​7
