The Observatory are pleased to have produced this with the help and support of the RDIN Society, Demography and Health Topic Group. Articles have been contributed both by members of the Topic Group and through wider networks and I would like to thank everyone involved.

The benefits that contact with the natural environment can have for an individual's health and wellbeing are increasingly accepted throughout the health and environmental sector, but there is still a need to ensure that the evidence for the benefits claimed is robust and can stand up to scrutiny. Walking the Way to Health (WHI), an initiative of Natural England and the British Heart Foundation, is taking action to ensure that the evidence collected is consistent nationally through the introduction of the Outdoor Health Questionnaire. The Integrated Household Survey (IHS) will be the largest ever continuous survey to be conducted in the UK. Work is ongoing within Office for National Statistics to integrate the major national social surveys – the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and associated boosts, i.e. the Annual Population Survey (APS); the Longitudinal General Household Survey (GSL); the Expenditure & Food Survey (EFS); the Omnibus Survey (OMN); and the English Housing Survey (EHS). The Office for National Statistics has been working on a set of 2006-based subnational population projections. In April 2008 a consultation exercise with local authorities and PCTs ended. Feedback was obtained from regional organisations on issues such as migration. Read more...
