The population of the West Midlands is changing. Over the next 20 years the number of people aged 85 and over will double, the region's population will become increasingly diverse and more people will be living alone or in small households.

We carried out an exercise to analyse a wide range of indicators of social and economic inclusion for neighbourhoods across the West Midlands. Our analysis looked at how the indicators relate to one another and how those patterns vary across the region.

We produced some early analysis of the West Midlands' performance on the Indices of Deprivation 2007, released by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Based on the overall deprivation scores we calculated the proportion of lower super output areas in each local authority that were in the 10% most deprived in the country. A report on the West Midlands' performance, comparison with the rest of England and maps comparing performance of the West Midlands between 2004 and 2007 are available to download.

This project explores attitudes, motivations and barriers to engagement in learning, skills and employment among disadvantaged groups and communities. The project consisted of a Jobcentre Plus survey of claimants followed by research with key groups and communities.
