Economic competitiveness

This section of our resource guide for preparing Local Economic Assessments (LEA) contains links to information about economic competitiveness.

One of the main purposes of the LEA is to give an evaluation of the area's overall economic competitiveness and productivity. This section therefore brings all other aspects of the Local Econonomic Assessments together to identify:

  • The key strengths and weaknesses of your area's competitiveness
  • How resilient your local economy is to external shocks such as recession, major closure, and so on
  • Key economic issues to address and which factors have the greatest potential to improve your area's economic performance
  • Key links to make with other areas of policy and other authorities and businesses

Much of this information will be derived from analysis carried out in the rest of the LEA, therefore not many sources are specifically relevant to this theme. However, we've included some of the main data sources used, some analysis carried out in the West Midlands and local areas, and other resources summarising key issues and outlooks elsewhere.

We produce occasional thematic reports addressing economy and workforce issues, including issues following the recession.
